A Significant Milestone as Rosenior Shatters Barriers

"Rosenior represents an excellent tactician that understands football intimately, which is the crucial factor.

"However, in my role as the Blues' pioneering black player, I would be lying to claim this appointment fails to move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, who earned his historic first appearance for Chelsea's senior side off the bench back in April 1982.

On Tuesday, the club appointed RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next head coach after the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also owns Chelsea.

Statistics show a mere 12 black managers – excluding those holding interim roles – in England's top flight since its inception 34 in the past.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is he grew up and played not far from here, he understands this community," added Canoville.

"When kids observe a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, someone they can identify with, who's from their ends, who comes from a household that fights for what's right… that's powerful and shows them the path is there.

"So yes, this represents a huge moment for the club, for London, for every young person with big dreams.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and let the man get on with the job."

What Exactly Do the Statistics Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' head coach in 1996 and became the Premier League's first black manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first black English manager in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other present Premier League gaffer of colour.

The lack of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game is matched by an absence of representation at executive level.

According to a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 study, forty-three percent of top-flight footballers come from black heritage.

Yet, research by Kick It Out revealed only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams across most Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic communities.

Regarding senior coaching positions, based on figures provided by 11 clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

Across all coaching roles – including senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is just 5%.

"He's certainly made history by virtue of him being announced as Chelsea manager, and we hope to see more of that," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know there is loads of talent present within black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. We need to continue to striving to break those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior will become the fourth permanent British head coaches currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's remaining big five divisions in terms of homegrown managers.

16 of the 20 top-flight coaches in Serie A are from Italy, Eleven of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany and 10 of the 18 in France.

Current Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt all young English managers with a youth development pedigree are, to some degree regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It's truly motivating for up-and-coming British academy coaches to witness someone land that job with that profile and everyone hopes he does really well."

'Let's not forget – he's there on merit'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of West London clubs, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint culminating in a brief stint at then-League One side Brentford FC back in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for his services in combating discrimination within the sport and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He started penning articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he acknowledged the under-representation among managers. He highlighted that ethnicity does not influence coaching skill arguing that roles must be awarded based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: that vast under-representation results in a failure to understand regarding footballers with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, he explained the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" or "passionate", but said he understood the Netherlands international of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to join him with a move from France to Chelsea this summer.

In subsequent newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "ashamed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a homophobic slur. He pledged his support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and wrote a public message to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "blatant" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name in the dugout – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid goodbye at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract at Chelsea.

Chelsea boasted the Premier League's first black manager in Gullit and the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
